I love this climb, especially at sunset. A steep initial climb on a concrete path soon becomes a beautiful, shaded ancient village path. We then turn left onto an overgown, slippery mud path which initially climbs very steeply and then undulates before one final, steep section towards the end. Push until your legs burn. You will feel like a wild animal. At the top beathe deeply, enjoy the view. You deserve it.

STRAVA HK Trail 1st half STRAVA
In the middle of Hong Kong Island runs the Hong Kong Trail. The first half is extremely runnable.. The run features shaded, muddy contour trails and also the occasional climb. Start at the Peak touching the Hong Kong Trail sign and finish just before the country parks road turns right and becomes Black's Link. I ended the segment here so that the possibility of changing clothes exists.

Tougher than running the Hong Kong Trail 1st half forwards. This has a cumulative elevation gain as opposed to a loss and offers a more relentless, punishing test. Still excellent for perfecting your pace on the flats. I actually prefer running it this way as it finishes at the Peak where food and beer are available. Start at the point where Black's Links becomes country park road. End at the Peak.

The 2nd half of the Hong Kong Trail is a fun test of trailrunning. It includes the climbs of Jardine's Lookout and Mount Butler. There are many mud contour trails, a few km on concrete catchwater and then the famous, undulating Dragon's Back. Start at the arch just before the stairs leading to Jardine's Lookout and finish at the last mileage post just before entering Tai Long village. Do it!!!

This route was pioneered by Sparky and Vince from the HK Trailrunners Meetup Group and offers a great, varied test of trailrunning. Starting with the long climb up Needle Hill and then a sustained climb on road to Grassy Hill. There then follows a long descent first steep on trail, then gentle on road and then a brutal last 5km on the Shing Mun Reservoir jogging track. Time to prove your toughness in the pain cave...

For me this 9km offers one of the ultimate tests of pure trailrunning in Hong Kong. Beginning with a steep climb there then follow undulating, runnable trails which lead to the sustained, brutal climb of Rooster Hill. Then a long, semi-technical descent down to the picnic site. A great test of sustained aerobic power. Start at the beginining of the climb near the road, finish at the first pagoda you reach.

I love this climb at sunset. Long and sustained, with occasional undulations. The route offers views of Shing Mun Reservoir, Tai Mo Shan. Watching the sky turn pink behind Shing Mun Reservoir at sunset is just brilliant. Why not take a small bottle of wine up too as a treat!! The final steep ascent to the summit is a real test of will. Start at the arch just before the steps begin and end at the trig. station.

A short, sharp aerobic segment up the short side of Needle Hill. Start from the helpiad at the base of the hill and touch the trigonometrical station at the top to finish. This is a fun segment, a sustained climb with amazing views of Sha Tin and Tai Wai to your left and Shing Mun Reservoir to your right. You can combine this segment with the Sha Tin Round Trip as this segment is a part of that run.

One of the most beautiful and rugged trailruns in Hong Kong. This is also the route for the yearly HK Trailrunners Meetup Group race. Start from the carpark near Wu Kau Tang village and finish in the helipad at the end of the main dam. This run undulates almost continuously on steep, technical paths and is a real tough challenge. The 2km flat main dam to end requires ultimate mental strength.

This is hike 5 from our Adventurous Hikes Book 1. Download the pdf of the route here!! I love this route. It has everything. An initial sustained climb finishing with the steep finalblast up the short side of Needle Hill. A lovely mud trail around Shing Mun Reservoir, then some overgrown trails before one of my favourite hidden contour trails in Hong Kong. A final climb and descent follow. Yeah.

A beautiful, evil climb. It begins shaded and then becomes more exposed the higher you get. Occasional steps, technical rocky sections, it remains determinedly steep and occasionally technical throughout. Start from the small bridge near the road and finish at the lookout point just before descending down to the road, which is about 50m away. Say on the Wilson Trail the whole way.

The Twins are legendary in Hong Kong. 1000 steps to the top of the first hill. This segment climbs the first hill of the Twins and starts from the small bridge at the bottom of the hill and finishes at the mileage post near the top of the hill. This is basically a sustained climb on steps of varying sizes and heights. A real aerobic test of explosive power. Don't start too fast - 8 minutes is a long time to climb!!!
