TUNG YEUNG SHAN & ROUGH DESCENT |
DATE: 29.12.2021 |
Saw a natural bee hive in a hill slope harvested by villagers who were sealing it off again with stones. Makes sense, as long as the bees have enough honey for winter and the queen is still in there. Nice to see the stairs on the climb to Tung Yeung Shan being constructed using natural materials. Including run offs using logs to prevent erosion. This is the way forward. |

HO CHUNG ROUGH CLIMB |
DATE: 05.12.2021 |
A Buffalo Hillbillies run. Up to Shek Nga Shan and then Brain Trail to Tai No, descending to Kai Ham. From there we did some road before embracing the rough climb back up to the Kei Pik Shan Trail. It was, honestly, quite overgrown in places. I loved it; always happy to get a few more scars onto myself. Not sure everyone loved it though :-) |

PAGODA RIDGE & WEST BUFFALO |
DATE: 26.11.2021 |
A Buffalo Hillbillies run. From Heng On MTR we took a lovely overgrown path in order to avoid the road to Ma On Shan BBQ Site. Then a bit of Goose Valley Lost Trail before hitting the main route up to The Hunchbacks. Fun climbing. The ridge to famous old Ma On Shan before a blast on Mac4 to Mau Ping. Then Mui Tsz Lam, Nui Po Au and finally ..... beer. Oh yes. |

RAM PATH & PAGODA RIDGE |
DATE: 20.11.2021 |
It's hard to get a good photo of Shek Nga Shan, as it is a difficult hill to get a good perspective of. I love it, and there are a plethora of weird, interesting routes up there. The view from the top, in all directions, is seriously gorgeous. With that slight hint of danger of being near to some steep drops. Happy I got this weird, defined outline of the myterious Shak Nga Shan. |

KOWLOON PEAK |
DATE: 18.11.2021 |
Reading Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason. It is a wonderful elucidation of the fluctuation between dark and euphoric moments of emotional expession and emotional wellbeing. Why people can hate you for being you without understanding why you are you. How cruel humans are. How forgiving, kind and open minded humans are. |

MA ON SHAN |
DATE: 14.11.2021 |
A Buffalo Hillbillies run. From Heng On MTR we took a lovely overgrown path in order to avoid the road to Ma On Shan BBQ Site. Then a bit of Goose Valley Lost Trail before hitting the main route up to The Hunchbacks. Fun climbing. The ridge to famous old Ma On Shan before a blast on Mac4 to Mau Ping. Then Mui Tsz Lam, Nui Po Au and finally ..... beer. Oh yes. |

SILVER GRASS #2 |
DATE: 10.11.2021 |
More silver grass goodness. Maybe a cliche, but it is gorgeous enough to transcend cliche. First Buffalo Hill ridge and then a little detour to Tai No before a blast up to Tung Yeung Shan. Enjoying the gentle warmth of sunset, absorbing the wonderful atmosphere. I started back before sunset. Even though I had a torch. Always carry a torch!!! |
PAT SIN LENG |
DATE: 07.11.2021 |
A Buffalo Hillbillies run. Starting from Hok Tau Reservoir we climbed Wilson Trail 9 up to the ridge. Then past Wong Leng and to Shun Yeung Fung, the start of Pat Sin Leng. A nice little freestyle blast to Hsien Ku Fung followed by a sturdy descent to Tai Mei Tuk. Then came swimming, BBQ and beer. Well, you gotta do it really. Rude not to :-) |
SILVER GRASS #1 |
DATE: 06.11.2021 |
Slow run up to Buffalo Hill and over West Buffalo Hill enjoying the silver grass. It's beautiful really when the sun pushes through and gives it contours. No need for eloquence. Trails are opening up a bit. Shame really, the rougher the better as far as I'm concerned. But then again, if you love overgrown trails, you can always find overgrown trails :-) |

KOWLOON PEAK & OFFICE |
DATE: 26.10.2021 |
Well, another little blast up to Kowloon Peak from Fei Ngo Shan Road. The foliage incrementally changing as subtle autumn colours infiltrate summer green. Still hot, but not pervasive heat. A heat you know will subside. Always love the blast up to Kowloon Peak. Breathless. Took a nice little pic of my office too. With a singular view of Tate's Cairn :-) |

NGAU AU SHAN & ENCHANTED STREAM |
DATE: 24.10.2021 |
I ran to Mui Tsz Lam and then took the Ram Path to Mau Ping. A slightly overgrown village path with some stunning scenery. Taking time to enjoy the various delights of overgrown trails in sun, and mysterious shadowy streams. Next arrived Buffalo Hill and the Pagoda Ridge Descent. Subtle colours, soft clouds, a cool breeze and warming sunset sun. |
NGAU AU SHAN & ENCHANTED STREAM |
DATE: 20.10.2021 |
The initial climb of Ngau Au Shan was a delight. Walking into dreamy clouds and pushing through undergrowth. A couple of caterpillar burns first time this summer too! Then came the descent to the enchanted stream. I had intended to follow it to Lao Shu Tian but the path was serioulsy overgrown. Then obnoxiously beautiful sunset clouds on the run home. |
LUK CHAU SHAN & MA ON SHAN |
DATE: 17.10.2021 |
An overgrown path from Mui Tsz Lam to Luk Chau Shan. Slightly surprised by how overgrown it was, this path has had a good summer! Gorgeous. Accompanied by a delightful breeze. Then past Canoe Rock and the climb of Ma On Shan and the ridge to Mount Hallowes. Now the descent over the Hunch Backs to Ma On Shan Tsuen Road which is just pure fun. |
KOWLOON PEAK COOLER |
DATE: 16.10.2021 |
A nice little run up to Gilwell Campsite and then down fei Ngo Shan Road. Then came the steep climb up to Kowloon Peak which is just such a fun blast. This is the first time I realised that it's becoming a bit cooler now. All our legs can move a bit faster. Kowloon Peak was as scenic as ever and that ridge just never disappoints. |
BUFFALO HILLBILLIES GUY'S CONTOUR |
DATE: 02.10.2021 |
From Sha Tin Wai we ran past the Scout Centre. Really nice trails up to the Wilson Trail. Then the Wilson contour for a while, before taking Guy's Contour. Which is an amazing trail that starts with a slightly technical climb and becomes an amazing mud contour. Then came Temple Hill and a quick descent at Lion Rock Pavilion. Before beer and a chat. Perfect. |
NIGHTS ARE ALRIGHT |
DATE: 26.09.2021 |
Trying to get as many night runs in as possible whilst the weather is still toasty warm and gorgeous. It's amazing how the atmosphere changes at night. The intense proximity of the immediate trail highlighted by torch beam; compared to the vast, mysterious expanse of darkness around you. |
DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK |
DATE: 22.09.2021 |
Same way up, as down yesterday. Still an overgrown, slippery beast. But climbing is always easier than descending. Especially when there is still daylight as the ultimate torch. Instead of a small torch as your only torch. |
CLEAR SKIES DARK DESCENT |
DATE: 21.09.2021 |
Weird, gorgeous skies after the thunderstorms. Clean but one step removed. The colours and visibility just did not feel real. But ..... once you start going downhill in the dark on a wet, slippery, overgrown trail things start feeling real in a real hurry. And I mean that for real. Gotta wear it. |

BUFFALO HILLBILLIES |
DATE: 05.09.2021 |
The very first Buffalo Hillbillies run. We ran from Fa Sam Hang to Mui Tsz Lam and then took the hidden Ram Trail to Mau Ping. After that we ran up to Buffalo Pass before climbing Buffalo Hill and West Buffalo Hill, taking the rough, sunset strewn descent. Gorgeous run. Great company. And beers at the finish. Obviously! |
DARKNESS AND LIGHT |
DATE: 04.09.2021 |
I'm not sure we always compute the flash of colour, light and darkness whilst we trailrun. Our brain probably just turns it into an acceptable visage of our physical surroundings. But the purely visual aspect of it is quite confusing. Just wanted to highlight a bit of the light, dark and subtle hues of colour on the trails. |
TURRET HILL NORTH FACE |
DATE: 03.09.2021 |
The descent from Turret Hill to Mui Tsz Lam Road is a bit of a monster. Overgrown. Slippery. Eroded. Steep. Ohhhhh, and gorgeous with an amazing view! |
THE FAMOUS WINDOW |
DATE: 26.08.2021 |
All those vain Instagrammers posing at the West Buffalo Hill rock window - this is where they are posing. Actually, the surrounding rocks are far more interesting. And the surrounding scenery gorgeous. This is my take on it. And no photo of myself because honestly, nature is better. Much better. |
TURRET HILL LEAF DESCENT |
DATE: 24.08.2021 |
Climbing Turret Hill I took a few of the surrounding trails towards the south and then took an overgrown one for sunset heading down to Fa Sam Hang. It was slightly overgrown, especially towards the end, but pushing through undergrowth is a pleasure. You should try it sometime. And at the end leaves. Big leaves. Setting sun. Big leaves. You get the idea. |
GOLDEN ORB BIG MEAL |
DATE: 16.08.2021 |
If I could eat something about half my body weight then I definitely would, because I love food. This Golden Orb Weaver had captured a massive beetle and was slowly enjoying it. I'm really gonna miss these spiders when they are gone in a couple of months. They are so much fun. And I am writing that even after accidentally running through hundreds of their webs. |
RAINY SPLASHY FROGGIE |
DATE: 09.08.2021 |
Well, the weather has been shit for ages. And most trailruns involve getting stuck in heavy rain, trying to avoid thunderstorms and getting soaked. Myself and froggie were the only ones out there. Where were you? |
SEPIA |
DATE: 26.07.2021 |
One of the most memorable evenings of my life was in Holland Park in London. Sunset. Myself and one of my best friends were drinking rose in the park whilst chatting and walking around the park. Having amazing fun. And the light was tinted by sepia. This trailrun reminded me of that moment. |
KOWLOON PEAK |
DATE: 15.07.2021 |
Kowloon Peak is always a good climb. Especially if you take the steep ascent from Fei Ngo Shan Road. You need to get a nice rhythm, take big steps and keep going. But can you keep going till the top? That is the question. And oh yeah, sunset is always a spectacle. That ridge is amazing. A real test of trailrunning. |
BUFFALO HILL |
DATE: 13.07.2021 |
Ending trailruns in the dark is a pleasure. I always carry a torch with me and can relax as to my pace and aspirations for the run and the route. Sometimes you find small pockets of colour in darkness. Then ..... keep running. |
WASP ROCK & MA ON SHAN |
DATE: 10.07.2021 |
Mui Tsz Lam before a hidden path on an eroded trail with quite stark scenery. I passed a rock I named Wasp Rock and then cut a metaphotical furrow through some fun undergrowth to Canoe Rock. Then up to Ma On Shan in time for sunset and a rocky quite steep downhill from Mount Hallowes. A bit of contour, then steep to the end. |
GOLDEN ORB WEAVER SUNSET |
DATE: 08.07.2021 |
Took the rough ridge up to Buffalo Hill and West Buffalo Hill and then just took time to enjoy the clouds and colours. Especially when sunset was casting light on various entities, including a leaf and a Golden Orb Weaver. |
CLOUDY BUT CLEAR KOWLOON PEAK |
DATE: 07.07.2021 |
Same as below, just with fucking amazing clouds and visibility throughout the entire run. |
CLOUDY KOWLOON PEAK |
DATE: 05.07.2021 |
I started this run in glorious sunshine with some stunning cloud formations vying for attention. So why not Kowloon Peak? That is a prime spot to view clouds. Reaching the top, it was sunny. Five minutes after reaching the top, banks of cloud swept across the ridge. Still gorgeous. Still amazing. Just not sunny. |
BUFFALO RIDGE |
DATE: 04.07.2021 |
Started off exploring a few overgrown trails around Mui Tsz Lam. There are so many gorgeous, hidden trails in that area and old village paths. Then went up to Buffalo to descend the ridge to Fa Sam Hang in swirling clouds. This ridge is technical, steep, overgrown, slippery and definitively gorgeous. |
CLOUDS |
DATE: 02.07.2021 |
Took the old village path from Shek Nga Pui to Tai No, enjoying the greenery. Then a quick blast up to Tung Yeung Shan to enjoy the views and a climb into towering clouds. Summer cloud formations are one of my favourite things. I quite often, intentionally climb hills when there are intersting clouds in the vicinity just to look at the. Yes. Clouds are brilliant. |
TUNG YEUNG SHAN |
DATE: 30.06.2021 |
Not the best weather so decided to do a blast of Tung Yeung Shan. Just to try and ensure the climbing muscle memory remains vaguely in place. Apparently these Scolopendra sp. centipedes can give a really nasty bite. Even though I have seen a lot of them, thankfully, I can't comment on how painful the bite is. |
MUI TSZ LAM & BUFFALO RIDGE |
DATE: 19.06.2021 |
Another day of exploration and stopping to look at things. The golden orb weaver spiders are getting bigger but not full sized yet. I adore them. Very charismatic. |
BUFFALO PASS MEANDERINGS |
DATE: 17.06.2021 |
There is so much wildlife on Hong Kong's trails during the summer that the only way not to see it, is if you have blinkers on. A random example, are the rhinoceros beetle (Trichogomphus mongol) and the two mating looper moths (Milionia zonea) that I have posted in this gallery. This really is just the tip of the iceberg though. |
THE PATH TO SUCCESS |
DATE: 03.06.2021 |
People are quite rightly outraged at the amount of concrete on Hong Kong's trails. Historically, the solution to a heavily used or eroded trail was to dump a load of concerte on it. Hopefully things are slowly changing. This path is a beacon. After a landslide it was reparied using locally sourced rock and natural materials. With water run off created from logs. Love it. |
ROAD RUNNER (NOT) |
DATE: 26.05.2021 |
Ran to Gilwell Campsite and then along Fei Ngo Shan Road. I'm not really a road runner. In fact, it is unequivocal that I am faster climbing a hill, than running on a flat concrete road. I guess it's all about motivation and desire. And being in your natural habitat. But nice views all the same. |
TUNG YEUNG SHAN NEST |
DATE: 24.05.2021 |
A gentle soujourn up the rough side of Tung Yeung Shan. Inspiring clouds and everything sprouting green. Also a bird's nest sadly fallen on the way back. Amazing construction. |
MUI TSZ LAM RAM PATH |
DATE: 22.05.2021 |
Starting from Fa Sam Hang up to Turret pass and then the delightful, slippery descent to Mui Tsz Lam. From here a little scrambling and onwards dear friend, to the Ram Path; a mixture of old village path and overgrown trails. Then the Buffalo Hill just for kicks. Check out the sunset though. Worth it? Worth it. |
BUFFALO RIDGE SNAKE |
DATE: 16.05.2021 |
Mad clouds all over the place. Taking the overgrown route up to Buffalo at sunset. Keep the legs moving. Allow the shrubbery to caress your limbs. A common wolf snake on the way down too. They are nice. |
LUK CHAU SHAN & PYRAMID HILL |
DATE: 15.05.2021 |
Fa Sam Hang to Mui Tsz Lam and then an overgrown climb to a hidden, brilliant contour trail. Another overgrown climb and some scrambling before hitting the main up to Luk Chau Shan. Passing Canoe Rock, which is not that photogenic unless you want it for selfies (vain?). Up to Pyramid Hill as sun slowly sinks and then blood orange. Lush. |
RIDGE |
DATE: 14.05.2021 |
Every day is different on the trails. Everything changes all the time, even on routes that are the same. Hitting the overgrown Buffalo Ridge. Out there enjoying the view and bre3athing. P.S. That 3 was a typo but I'm leaving it in cause I like it. |
TURRET HILL NORTH FACE |
DATE: 12.05.2021 |
Starting from Fa Sam Hang up to Turret pass and then up to Turret Hill. Following the long, slightly overgrown and technical descent of the north face. This is a classic descent. Steep, technical, overgrown, slippery, undulating. Gotta get back there and absolutely go for this one day. Shredder. |

BUFFALOES FUN LOADS |
DATE: 11.05.2021 |
Breathing. Running. Sweating. Just look at the view. This is life. We all exist. But this is life. |
KOWLOON PEAK SUNSET |
DATE: 10.05.2021 |
The climb of Kowloon Peak from Fei Ngo Shan Road is a steep confusion. Hard to get a sustained rhythm, with awkward eroded stairs and a lot going on. I adore the climb though. And sometimes, if you hit the ridge at sunset, you'll get a blood orange sunset that Turner would poshumously salivate over. Back in the dark. Perfect. |
